The Cure for The Conditions of Empire
You were not born apologising.
You were not born worrying about whether you are too much. You did not come into this world with the need to keep everyone around you comfortable; to laugh when you wanted to scream, to stay silent when you wanted to let loose a barrage of sharp wit.
No.
You learned it all — lessons gleaned from living inside a set of conditions designed to keep you small, manageable, palatable.
I call these conditions Empire - patriarchy, colonialism, ablism, capitalism, the whole hulking beast with many arms. Empire is not a place; it is an architecture. An architecture that lives inside your body. It is the way you round your shoulders when you try to stand up for yourself. The stiffness of your spine that never quite disappears even when you rest. The apology that escapes your mouth before your request. The way you play and replay a conversation, dissecting every detail, constructing every retort you did not say but wish you did.
These are not personality flaws. All of these are architecture, and you have been trying to fix them with a gratitude journal.
Here is why that hasn’t worked.
Everything that the wellness industry sells you assumes that the problem is you. Fix your mindset. Manifest under the new moon. Find your purpose (did it roll under the sofa?). The reason you struggle financially is not late-stage capitalism; it’s because you need to regulate your nervous system. Please. Spare me.
All of this advice puts the onus squarely on the individual, leaving the actual systems of harm relatively untouched. While you’re busy adding crystals and incense to your Amazon cart, The Architecture of Empire grows larger and sturdier every day.
You cannot self-care your way out of architecture; you can only build another structure.
The Cure for The Architecture of Empire is the Structure of Grace.
Grace is the thing that was there before Empire, and will be here long after Empire has crumbled. Grace is the favour we do not have to perform for, that arrives before we are ready to receive it. It is not transactional; we cannot buy it or earn it, and that is why Empire cannot touch it. It operates under completely different rules - a whole other energetic structure.
Empire demands we pay and perform to earn the right to be seen as human, but with grace, we simply are.
And when grace permeates us, when it fills our energy body, we can rest in its structure. We no longer need to prove we are a “good person”. We can stop building a case for why we need rest or care or attention or love. We can be complex, a paradox. We can be furious and kind. We can be celebrated and a disappointment. We can be the one who survived and the one who gets to thrive.
Grace is what holds this tension. So that it does not tear you apart, but hold you up.
A woman who can feel it all - not collapse into despair or bypass into fantasy - is ungovernable. She cannot be flattered or bought; she cannot be guilted or managed by those who still benefit from her compliance, those who still serve Empire. No. She sees exactly what is happening in a room; she trusts her intuition, and she acts accordingly. She says the true thing. She holds a boundary. She stops being available for disrespect and exploitation.
It is a skill, and every single one of us who commits to training takes another brick out of the wall of The Architecture of Empire.
Maybe I am not one of these women yet - but I am raising two of them, and I am obsessed with how I could do that while still figuring all this out myself.
The Condition Cure is not a cure for you - you were never the problem.
It is a cure for the conditions - The Conditions of Empire.
